Creating an Urban Oasis: A Student Idea Competition for the Tejgaon Old Airport Site, Dhaka

A planning and design competition was organized under the initiative of Association of BUET Alumni (ABUETA) in association with the Institute of Architects, Bangladesh (IAB), Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) and Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) for the students of Architecture, Planning, Engineering and other disciplines studing in different universities of Bangladesh.

In total 44 projects were submitted for the competition from different universities. The competition held in February 26, 2015. Among the submitted projects, 31 selected projects were displayed in this exhibition arranged at the Nalini Kanta Bhattashali Gallery. A book was published compiling these 31 projects and write ups of eminent professionals. Creative ideas and visionary outlook of the students were reflected through these projects, proper implementation of which can expectantly make the mechanized urban life more enjoyable.

On Friday, 30 October, 2015 at 3:45 PM, an exhibition inauguration and book launching program of this competition were arranged in Kobi Sufia Kamal Auditorium, National Museum. In this program Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Honorable Speaker, National Parliament, was present as chief guest. Mr. Mohammad Sayeed Khokon, Honorable Mayor, Dhaka South City Corporation and Mr. Annisul Huq, Honorable Mayor, Dhaka North City Corporation were present as special guests. Along with the chief and special guests, Professor Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, President, ABUETA; Professor Abu Sayeed M Ahmed, President, Institute of Architects Bangladesh; Engr. Kabir Ahmed Bhuyian, President, Institute of Engineers Bangladesh; and Professor Dr. Golam Rahman, President, Bangladesh Institute of Planners delivered their speech on the occasion. A vote of thanks was conveyed by Prof. Dr. Ishrat Islam, Convener, Organizing Committee. Many respected guests and students were present at the program.
