Students of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of BUET Achieved 3rd Position at Global Level in UN-Habitat: “Urban Revitalization of Mass Housing” Competition

Students of Department of Urban and Regional Planning of 2010 Batch, BUET achieved 3rd position at the global level competition “Urban Revitalization of Mass Housing” arranged by UN-Habitat. The competition started in September 15, 2013, with a theme of “achieving adequate shelter for all by placing housing at the center of our thinking, policy and the city”. A total of 97 Teams from 64 Cities, 55 Universities, and 35 Countries have participated and the projects were evaluated by 40 Jury members in different stages.
In this competition, a group named Shining Stars, formed by six students (Tasfia Tasnim, Tasnim Feroze, Faisal Bin Islam, Fariba Siddiq, Poushali Bhattacharjee and Sumaya Tabassum Tonny) of 2010 batch of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET submitted a project on “Revitalization of Slums Areas of Dhaka through Mass Housing”. Their study discussed about the problems and prospects of “Pora Bosti” and “Beltola” slums of Dhaka North City Corporation and proposed a detailed site plan based on mass housing developments.

They proposed some innovative ideas for revitalizing the housing condition and livelihood of the inhabitants. They have tried to address all dimensions of sustainability (environmental, economic and social). For economic sustainability, they have introduced various economic activities like rearing of cattle and poultry, fish cultivation, involvement in urban agriculture in a small scale and working in handicrafts art which can increase the income of the urban poor and may also result in numerous good outcomes like economic sustainability, lessening of ecological footprint, preservation of water bodies, optimum utilization of space. Ppedestrian movement has been encouraged in their design and there is emphasis on improvement of accessibility, provision of necessary community facilities and eco friendly housing material for sustainable neighborhood and thus promoting better social interactions and livability.

The competition is being held on three levels: national, regional and global level. The jury evaluation took place during February and March 2014. The National Winners were announced on 25th March, 2014. Team “Shining Stars” has been declared as National Winner of Bangladesh.

“Urban Revitalization of Mass Housing Competition Award Ceremony” took place in on Friday, 11 April 2014 in "One UN Room" in the Exhibition Area at ‘World Urban Forum’ in Medellin, Columbia. The event started at 2:45 and ended at 4:45 pm, Colombia local time. The Regional and Global results have been announced during the award ceremony. Team “Shining Stars” form Dhaka, Bangladesh has been ranked first from Asia and the Pacific region. Later, from these six regional winners, “Shining Stars” from Bangladesh achieved 3rd position globally. The team will be awarded with the prize money of USD 3000 by the organizers. The team named “Casablanca” from Morocco achieved 2nd position team and the team “Improvistos” from Spain achieved the 1st position.
