Workshop on “Community Improvement through Participatory Planning”, held at DURP, BUET

A workshop on Community Improvement through Participatory Planning was held on October 9, 2012, at Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). This workshop was organized by the Batch 2007 and was chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Ishrat Islam, BUET. The chief guest was Professor. Dr. Roxana Hafiz, Head of DURP, BUET. Other faculty members were also present at the workshop. The outcome of community-based initiatives to ease different local problems like local traffic-congestion and water logging problems in different areas of the capital was the main focus of this workshop. Representatives from seven different CBOs (Community Based Organizations) were present in the workshop to discuss about the prospects and problems of their individual locality.

The students of URP conducted surveys in seven different areas of the capital -- Lalbagh, Monipuripara, North Shyamoli-West Agargaon, Hoseni Dalan, Kathal Bagan, Purana Paltan and Bangshal. By interviewing the local people and CBOs’ representatives and having different group discussions, the students tried to identify the major problems of those areas, the cause and effects of the problems and finally they came with some probable solutions for the problems. This whole study of identifying local community based planning problems was conducted through Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) technique. First the identified problems were ranked using pair-wise ranking method. Then the root cause and the effects of those problems were explored. Although different community had different problems but, some problems were common in all of the communities (i.e. traffic congestion, water logging, drainage problem and water supply). Addressing the problems of the community the role of CBO was focused in problem resolution.
