A workshop of the Bangladeshi-Sino-German research program “Megacities – MegaChallenge: Informal Dynamics of Global Change” took place from February 23 to February 24, 2010 at the Council Building and at the Accidental Research Institute (ARI) of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). This workshop was jointly organized by the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) in collaboration with the University of Cologne, Germany. This was the 3rd workshop jointly organized by the DURP, BUET and German universities.
The theme of the workshop was “The State, Key Drivers and Scenarios of Urban Informality” where the discussion took place over the role of the government in both limiting and encouraging or even creating the informal agency and informal institutions. More than 80 persons attended the workshop from home and abroad. A total of 13 papers on Informality and Urban Informal Economy, Urban Health, Climate Change and Climate Induced Vulnerability were present in 4 technical sessions of the workshop. The workshop was chaired by the Prof. Dr. Sarwar Jahan, Head of DURP, BUET and the chief guest was Prof. Nazrul Islam, Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC). As a special guest Prof. Dr. A.M.M. Safiullah, Vice Chancellor, BUET presented at the workshop too. The scientific committee members of the workshop were Prof. Dr. Roxana Hafiz, Prof. Dr. Sarwar Jahan, Prof. Dr. Frauke Kraas, Prof. Dr. Volker Kreibich, Dr. Wolfgang-Peter Zingel, Md. Musleh Uddin Hasan and Harald Sterly. On the evening of February 23, 2010 a joint dinner with the workshop participants was held in the Golden Chimney restaurant, Dhaka.
