The Seminar on ?Alleviation of Urban Poverty through Good Governance? was held on June 5, 2007 in the Council Building of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Dhaka. The conference was jointly organized by the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Bangladesh.

The conference was inaugurated by a plain opening session at the Council Building of BUET at 9.30 AM on the 5th June, 2007. Mr. Mohammad Anwarul Iqbal, the Honourable Advisor, Ministries of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives; and Labour and Employment, Government of the Peoples? Republic of Bangladesh declared the seminar open. Professor Nazrul Islam, Chairman, University Grants Commission and Mr. Manoj Basnyat, Country Director, UNDP Bangladesh was present as the special guest. The Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Professor Dr. A.M.M. Safiullah was present as the chairman. Professor Dr. Sarwar Jahan, Dean Faculty of Architecture and Planning, BUET welcomed all in the seminar and Prof. Dr. Roxana Hafiz, Seminar Convener and Head, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET gave vote of thanks and presented a key note paper.

Right after the refreshment break of the opening session, the session II (technical) started in the Council Building at 11.00 AM. Eminent scholars working on urban poverty and governance in Bangladesh presented four papers in the two technical sessions of the seminar. The first paper was presented on ?Policies for Poverty Alleviation: A Holistic Approach? by Professor Dr. Sarwar Jahan, Dean, Faculty of Architecture and Planning, BUET. The discussants of this paper were Prof. Dr. Mahbub Uddin, Department of Sociology, University of Dhaka and Professor Khaleda Rashid, Department of Architecture, BUET. The second paper was ?Shelter and Land for the Poor? presented by Dr. Nazrul Islam Nazem, Center for Urban Studies, Dhaka. The discussants of the paper were Planner Mr. Al Ameen and Prof. Dr. Shahidul Amin, Department of Architecture, BUET. This session was chaired by Professor Dr. Sardar Aminul Islam, Chairman, Department of Sociology, Dhaka University.

After the lunch and prayer break, the session III (technical) started in the Council Building at 2.00 PM. The third paper was ?Actors in Poverty Alleviation: Role of Government, NGOs and Urban Development Partners? presented by Md. Musleh Uddin Hasan and Dr. Gulsan Ara Parvin, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET. The discussants of the paper were Prof. Dr Tofael Ahmed, Department of Public Administration, Chittagong University and Prof. Dr. Mahbubur Rahman, Department of Architecture, North-South University, Dhaka. The last paper was ?Strengthening Pourashavas (Municipalities) for Urban Poverty Reduction? by Mr. Kazi Ehsanul Kabir, UDD, Dr. Sarwar Jahan, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET and Dr. Roxana Hafiz, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET. The discussants of the paper were Professor Dr. Hafiza Khatun, Department of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka and Dr. Golam Mortuza, Department of Urban and Rural Planning Discipline, Khulna University. This session was chaired by Professor Dr. K.M. Maniruzzam, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET.

The seminar had participants from professionals, academics, government and non-government officials. The seminar was finished by a simple closing session with vote of thanks from the Chairperson of closing session, Prof. Dr. Sarwar Jahan, Dean, Faculty of Architecture and Planning, BUET and Ms. Shaila Khan of United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Bangladesh.
