The 1st Annual Regional Conference on Regional Science (ACRS1) was held on the 16th and 17th March 2007 in three venues at the premise of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Dhaka. The conference was jointly organized by the Bangladesh Regional Science Association (BRSA) and Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). A total of 111 participants attended the conference including 12 from USA, Japan, New Zealand and Malaysia. Prof. Georrfey J. D. Hewings, past President of Regional Science Association International (RSAI), Prof. Yoshiro Higano, Executive Secretary of Pacific Regional Science Conference Organization (PRSCO), Prof. Jacques Poot, Immediate Past Executive Secretary of PRSCO attended the conference to show their solidarity with BRSA and to guide and assess the intellectual competence and potentials in this new chapter of regional science.

The conference was inaugurated by a plain opening session at the Council Building of BUET at 9.00AM on the 16th March, 2007. Dr. C.S. Karim, Honorable Advisor, Ministries of Agriculture; Environment & Forests and Fisheries & Livestock of the Government of the People?s Republic of Bangladesh declared the conference open. The Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Prof. Dr. A.M.M. Safiullah was also present as the special guest. The guests were highly optimistic of the conference (and association as well) for its multidisciplinary approach of functioning and bringing together people of diverse interest. Prof. Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, Convener of the Conference Organizing Committee and a faculty of the Department of Sociology of University of Dhaka, welcomed all in the conference and Prof. Roxana Hafiz, Head, Dept. of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET assured of all out cooperation from the department and university for successful holding of the conference and for running the activities of BRSA in the days to come. Prof. Hewings and Prof. Higano forwarded message of the international community about their interest in and optimism about the Bangladesh chapter of the association. Lastly, Prof. Sarwar Jahan, President BRSA and a faculty of the Dept. of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET, thanked all the participants and international delegated for all the trouble faced and time spent in attending the conference.

Right after the refreshment break of the opening session, the plenary session started in the Council Building at 11.00 AM with Prof. Jacques Poot in the chair and continued till the 12.30PM. In the session papers were presented by Prof. Sarwar Jahan, (President, BRSA) and Prof. K.M. Maniruzzaman (Executive Secretary, BRSA) on Regional Science in Bangladesh, by Prof. Geoffrey J.D. Hewings on Analytical Challenges to Regional Development and by Prof. Yoshiro Higano on The Role of RSAI and PRSCO.

A total number of 67 papers were presented in the 17 technical sessions on Urban Studies, Housing Studies, Rural Studies, Economic Studies, Environment Studies, Transport Studies, Social Studies, Regional Planning and Disaster Studies and Agriculture Studies.

A special session for young researchers was arranged as the last session of the 2 day long conference. As many as 60 young researchers gathered in the ITN Centre of BUET to hear form Prof. Hewings and Prof Poot on the prospect of higher studies in regional science and possibilities of cooperation from the global bodies to them in this regard. With the questions and queries about diversified matters the session became very lively and successful.

All the participants were hosted a Dinner by the Conference Organizing Committee at the Centre of Excellence at the University of Dhaka on the 16th March, 2007. Prof. Dr. S. M. A. Faiz, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Dhaka attended the program as the chief guest and Prof. Dr. Harun-or Rashid, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Dhaka as the special guests. A cultural program was arranged by the students of the Department Urban and Rural Planning of BUET before the dinner to share with the participants the rich spirit and regional and global reflections in culture of Bangladesh.

On the second and last day of the conference a special meeting was arranged with the foreign participants and RSAI and PRSCO officials to discuss the ways and means for strengthening the activities of BRSA and share more knowledge on regional science. A dinner at a typical Bangladeshi restaurant was also arranged.

The conference had participants from professionals, academics, government and non-government officials. Specially the participation and enthusiasm of the young researcher was remarkable. The conference was finished by a simple closing session with vote of thanks from the Convener of the Conference Organizing Committee Prof. Mahbub Uddin Ahmed (Department of Sociology, University of Dhaka) and Prof. Roxana Hafiz (Head, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET).
